Great day at the San Francisco Garden Show

This past Wednesday was the opening day of the SF Flower and Garden Show.  I’ve attended the show just about every year for the past eight years, and felt this year was one of the best.

The Gardens
What makes a good show? Number one is the caliber of the display gardens, which can range from highly conceptual to on-trend to practical examples of outdoor living.  This year’s show delivered a nice mixture of all three.

All New Square Foot Gardening Cookbook

If you have even a passing interest in vegetable gardening, you’re probably familiar with the term square foot gardening.  Originally coined by Mel Bartholomew in his best selling Square Foot Gardening books, it’s an organic vegetable gardening method that emphasizes compost, companion plants, and planting in biointensive grids to improve soil structure, control weeds and improve yields.  Twenty years and several books later, Mel has released the All New Square Foot Gardening Cookbook. Lest you have any doubt that growing your own food is finally catching on in a big way, the SFG Cookbook has been the number one selling cookbook for an astonishing 24 weeks.  Jean Ann Van Krevelen, Director of Social Media for Cool Springs Press and co-author of Grocery Gardening, was kind enough to provide a copy for me to review.

I sometimes meet people who think gardening is nothing more than a hobby practiced by retirees and plant-obsessed nerds.  When I wrote the treatment for Rebecca's Garden, I had to identify who the audience was and what I wanted them to get out of it.  I made this film as a learning experience rather than for a specific audience, but if you're a gardener, my hope is that you will see a little of your own story reflected in Rebecca's. If you're not a gardener, then I hope this film will help you understand the depth of the connection we gardeners feel for our gardens.
